Europa Fest
2003

EuropaFest is a uniquely designed performance experience
for the conductor who wishes to emphasize maximum educational
and musical value in a performance festival.
This program provides:
- A cultural exchange with Dutch families through a carefully
designed homestay program.
- A pre-tour clinic for the ensemble and the ensemble
conductor at the group's home location with a festival
adjudicator to help prepare for the festival.
- In Europe, a rehearsal session with festival adjudicators
before the festival performance.
- A public adjudication performance for adjudicators,
other participating ensembles, Dutch families and the
general public.
- A gala banquet and concert featuring an award winning
European Brass Band and Choir.
Adjudication and Rehearsal Clinics
The pre-adjudication rehearsal clinic offers a unique concept
in festival design. In preparation for the festival, a festival
clinician/adjudicator will travel to the home location of
each participating musical group for a Preliminary Rehearsal
Clinic. This is meant to assist the group and it's director
in preparation of the selected required piece to be performed
at the Festival Gala Adjudication Concert. The date of the
visit and approach to this rehearsal session are the result
of advance discussions by the director and the visiting
adjudicator.
At the Gala Adjudication Concert, each participating group
will perform a warm-up piece (not adjudicated), a selection
from the required music list, and a concert piece of the
director's choosing. Compositions may not exceed a combined
performance time of 30 minutes. Copies of full scores, not
to include the warm-up piece, must be provided for each
of the three adjudicators. Taped and/or written critiques
will be provided by festival adjudicators. In an effort
to provide greater flexibility in clinic sessions and focus
on each group's individual musical progress and achievements,
adjudication critiques will be expressed verbally and through
written summary rather than to assign a place rating to
each group participating in the festival.
The Festival
Banquet ceremony will include presentations by civic and
festival officials and presentation of adjudicator critiques.
A distinguished festival recognition plaque will be presented
to directors. Each musical organization will be asked to
designate a spokesman for this event who will provide for
all in attendance a description of his/her ensemble, the
school or college or organization it represents, and a word
about it's home community.
